Pistorinia breviflora

It's very rare these days for me to find a new plant in our local areas, but perhaps I am not looking hard enough. I found a few specimens of these pretty little annual succulents yesterday at Grazalema. It grows from 6-14 cms tall and is native to Morocco and SW Spain. I believe that it is on the Red List for endangered plants in Andalucía.

This attractive succulent is native to the Mediterranean area in rocky outcrops. it is different to other Navelwort, whose flowers droop, in the fact that these flowers remain horizontal. It can grow to 25cms (10 inches) tall. The leaves are often round rather than wavy as shown here. it flowers from March to May.

This cultivated plant sometimes escapes into the wild and flowers from December to April. It was originally native to Morocco, but has naturalised in Gibraltar. It grows from 40-80cms tall. This one was photographed in Almeria.

May to August flowering though yesterday, 7.7.2013, they were beginning to go over in the strong sun and windy conditions. It grows from 5-15cms tall and is native to the Iberian Peninsula and NW Africa.
